Since discovering mineral makeup 2 years ago, I have tried many brands. Some were quite good and others were not. Some were just ok. After trying so many brands I finally had something to compare them against, so these reviews can be more complete.

Bare Escentuals is a very popular brand. In fact, they might be the oldest mineral makeup company. They were started in San Francisco in 1976, so they’ve been providing a more natural alternative for almost 30 years. Their most popular advertising is on infomercials, gaining them the nickname “Infomercial Mineral Makeup”. You might have seen them on home shopping network channels. Affiliates sell them on eBAY or their own personal websites. It’s a widespread brand and is often the first brand someone tries when they choose mineral makeup. It was the first brand I tried after seeing it on a late night infomercial.

I got a deal of two foundations, mineral veil and warmth, as well as three brushes for around $60 plus shipping. It was actually the I.D. Bare Minerals brand, but they are the same corporation. I chose the light foundation set.

When I tore into the package my first impression was surprise at how far down in the jar the sifter sat. It looked like I had only gotten 1/2 a jar of product! But I didn’t know anything about mineral makeup at this point, and figured that was just the norm. I couldn’t wait to try out the brushes…the kabuki had looked like so much fun!

I dutifully swirled, tapped and buffed. Immediately the harsh bristles irritated my sensitive skin. I dumped the kabuki and used the regular face application brush that came in my package. It applied the makeup with no irritation. I looked in the mirror, was pleased with what I saw, and went out for the day.

Later someone pointed out to me that I looked “streaky”. I thought that was odd, so I decided to practice my technique. And that’s a big part of getting any mineral makeup to look good. You have to perfect your technique and find what works for you and what gives you the look you like. I like a light to medium coverage, so I had to work to not apply too heavy handed. But I also had to make sure I buffed every single direction or my pores seemed more noticeable.

I was happy with the coverage, the color and the wearability. It was truly light and comfortable to wear, while still minimizing my rosacea. I was very pleased, and didn’t mind at all that I was charged for and sent a refill every three months. I couldn’t wait to expand my collection to include blushes and eyeshadows. But I was so excited to find a foundation that didn’t clog my pores, irritate my skin or look like a mask. I was unhappy with the shininess of the makeup, but that was about it.

When summer came I continued to wear Bare Escentuals and continued my exercise regimen. However, with the summer heat compounding my sweating, my face started itching. I mean, really itching. I couldn’t figure out what was causing it. I thought it might be my cleanser, moisturizer, etc. After all, I did have sensitive skin. After trying everything I could think of, including detergent, and nothing helped, it finally occurred to me to test my makeup. And sure enough, that’s what it was. I dumped it from my routine then, and did some research. That’s when I learned that the two things I disliked about the makeup (the itching and the shininess) were likely caused by the ingredient Bismuth Oxychloride.

There is no guarantee that you’re going to find a set with all of the items you want, every time. Most likely, especially if you have a half dozen items or so that you’re looking for, you’re only going to find a set that may have a handful of them. For example, maybe you need six items but the set you’re looking at on the shelf only has four of the items you need. If it’s missing the towel holder and a soap dispenser, you still may want to buy this set and subsidize it with the purchase of the two other items. You’re still saving money in the long run.

One important item to remember is that not all stores offer the same accessories when it comes to their prepackaged sets. So, it can pay to shop around. If you’re in a hurry, you may just settle for what you find at the first store. But if you have time on your side, shopping around may be able to save you a few more dollars in the long run.

Warm-Up before You Tee Off – Your golf swing is directly related to your physical condition and the state of preparedness of your body. Given the sedentary lifestyles of many amateur golfers it is crucial to warm-up and stretch prior to tee off. A little dynamic exercise including forward and backward shoulder rotations, upper body twists and arm circles go a long way in imbuing your stroke with looseness and fluidity. Knee rotations are a great for loosening up the legs and ankles. Take a few minutes before tee-off to enjoy some of these simple exercises. You’ll warm up the proper muscles and joints essential for your golf. What’s more, you’ll enjoy the pleasure of much more ease, relaxation and looseness in your game.

Shoulder Rolls - Stand in a relaxed upright position with your arms by your sides, lift your shoulders as high as you can towards your ears as you inhale. Hold briefly in the up position and then move them down and backwards in a circle. You’ll feel the pull in your deltoids at the bottom of your circle. Repeat 10 times. Reverse and repeat 10 times in the forward direction.

Upper Body Twists – You can use one of your clubs as a prop in this one. Again from a relaxed standing position with knees slightly bent, hold the club with one end in each hand. Raise your arms above and behind your head and bring the club shaft to rest on the fleshy part of your shoulders just below the base of your neck. Maintain your arm position with respect to your chest and keep your gaze fixed in the forward direction. Slowly turn your torso until you feel a nice twist in your trunk muscles. You’ll notice it in your abs, and your oblique muscles. Hold for 1 second, release and rotate back through center and continue onwards to the right-hand side. Hold for another second and reverse. Repeat 10 times or as desired.

Arm Circles – Stand in an upright posture with knees slightly bent and your arms relaxed and initially by your sides. To execute backward circles, swing your right-arm clockwise and your left arm counter-clockwise. Your hands may overlap and at the top of your circle. Let you arms to brush your ears in the swing past your head. Allow your hands to brush the outsides of your legs at the bottom of your swing arc. Release any tension from your arms and hands and simply allow them to be loose and floppy through the exercise. Repeat 20 times in the backwards direction and reverse to the forward direction for an additional 20 repetitions. To really challenge yourself try swing both arms in the same rotational direction and see what happens e.g. try swinging both arms counter-clockwise and watch your brain have a hissy-fit.

Knee Rotations – Stand with feet together and knees slightly bent. Place your hands on your knees and rotate clockwise for 20 reps. Repeat in the counterclockwise direction.

Like diamonds, the precious cubic zirconia (CZ) gems need to be cleaned to maintain their original brilliance and luster. Many variables in our surrounding can dull the shine of precious gems: body lotion, perfume, hairspray, perspiration, or just simply, normal everyday wear.

All lotions and soap film are some of the more difficult materials to remove. Just a little of any of these materials on your CZ stone, will take away much of the visual brilliance of the stone. So it is vital to keep your CZ clean to maintain its sparkling diamond look.

A convenient way to clean your CZ jewelry is to use a small brushing device with soft bristles (preferably a toothbrush), along with warm to hot water mixed with a mild liquid dishwashing detergent (such as the brand, Joy), and brush as well as possible to remove any scum build-up.

Then, rinse well in warm to hot water, pat dry with a clean cloth, and take a look. If more cleaning is needed, soak the jewelry piece in hot water, with about 1/3 detergent to 2/3 hot water. (The mix is not critical.) Then, just brush again. When you’re done cleaning your jewelry, be sure to dry it well so to keep its brilliant shine.

Avoid exposing your CZ jewelry to abrasive substances such as household chemicals when cleaning with bleach or ammonia, or when swimming in chlorinated water, as these chemicals can damage your jewelry. Although most abrasive cleansers will not damage a CZ stone, they will, however, take the lustrous shine off the metal in which the stone is set.

Gemologists can agree that CZ comes closer than any other gem material to matching the characteristics of a diamond–it’s uncanny. As CZ is quickly becoming more popular as a desirable substitute for diamond, it’s important to care for it the same way you would a diamond.

So if for some reason you cannot remove the dirt off your CZ jewelry, take it to a jeweler and give it a high-pressure steam clean, as would be done to a diamond. This will remove almost any scum off your jewelry.

When we clean a customer’s jewelry and inspect it for wear, and loose or missing stones, we find the jewelry needing repair is most often a jewelry piece that has never been cleaned by the owner. Persistent dirt gets between the metal settings and the stones, causing abrasive wear and eventually, perhaps a loose stone.

One of the most basic rules of jewelry care is to apply all lotions, make-up, hair spray, etc. first, before you put on your jewelry. To minimize scratches and other damage, store your jewelry either in a cloth pouch or in a separate compartment in your jewelry box.

Now that you know how easy it is to care for your CZ, be sure to clean your CZ jewelry regularly–depending on how often you wear it; if you wear it everyday, cleaning it once a week is sufficient.
