What do the names Fran, Helen, Eva, and Murph mean to average person?  Probably not much unless you are one of growing number of people throughout the world that associate those four names with Crossfit workouts that produce nothing less than bittersweet agony.  Crossfit is a fitness sensation that is growing in popularity all over the world. Crossfitters, as they are known to each other, can go to the Crossfit Headquarters website at Crossfit.com or to the popular social network CrossFixx.com to obtain a new workout everyday.  All the workouts are free on Crossfit.com.  No membership or registration fees, simply one workout a day ready for any takers.   

Fran, Helen, Eva, and Murph are just a small sampling of different Crossfit workouts.  Unlike routine gym workouts from a personal trainer or magazine, Crossfit workouts are commonly named.  There are the girls, such as the ones mentioned, plus others including Annie, Nicole, and Linda.  Along with the girls are the heroes that include the likes of Murph, Ryan, DT, and JT.  Several other workouts are named as well.  Named workouts that are not one of the girls or a hero include “Tabata Something Else” and “Twins”.  Naming the workouts is more than just designating one combination of exercises from another; the names are part of the Crossfit culture and mystique. Crossfitters from all over the world know what is meant by “What is your Fran time?” Translated, this is asking how long it takes to complete the workout Fran. 

How long it takes? Timing a workout?  Yes, that is correct.  With Crossfit, the majority of workouts are for time.  The idea of timing the workouts is the genius of the concept.  With most weight training regimens, the rep schemes may be predetermined as well as the weight.  However the time to complete the three sets of ten for example has a loose standard or any at all.  Crossfit workouts are standardized for benchmarking.  Someone completing the dreaded, yet popular, Fran workout would complete reps of twenty-one, then fifteen, and then nine of thrusters and pull-ups.  That is, the person would complete twenty-one thrusters and then twenty-one pull-ups before moving on to fifteen thrusters.  The weight for the thrusters would be ninety-five for males and sixty-five for females.  The pull-ups are done with body weight.  The weight would always stay the same. The times would change as fitness changes. The result is a measurable change in fitness.

When looking at Fran on paper, most fledgling Crossfitters will comment on the brevity of the workout and then ask the obvious “What is a thruster?”  A thruster is a front squat combined with shoulder press.  Once done, no doubt exists that it is a full body exercise.  Only multi-joint exercises are used in Crossfit.  Not to be seen in a Crossfit gym are isolation exercises such as curls and leg extensions.  The reason for the multi-joint movements according to the creator of Crossfit, Greg Glassman, is that they represent how humans use their body, as a whole.  In other words, the exercises are functional.  Beside thrusters and gymnastic movements such as pull-ups and handstand push-ups, Crossfit integrates Olympic lifts to develop functional strength and power.

The Internet has revolutionized the voice-over business. Today quality remote recording of voiceovers can be done virtually anywhere. With a PC, mic, and Internet connection, almost anyone can set up shop as a voice talent.

History of the Revolution

Not too long ago, a remote session entailed a voice over talent standing in a commercial production house studio, say, in L.A., taking direction over the telephone through a “phone patch” from, say, New York City.

The next innovation in remote recording was the satellite link. It sounds great on either end, but it’s very expensive, so it’s suited only for sessions with the biggest budgets and most expensive talents.

A few years after the satellite link came the more economical ISDN, which stands for Integrated Services Digital Network. ISDN is a digital hookup via the telephone system. Each location is connected to the other through a piece of hardware called a “codec.” An ISDN hookup is preferred by agencies and clients with budgets large enough to accommodate the additional cost of recording an out-of-market voice over artist.

The latest, and, so far, most liberating technology available to voice over talents is the now ubiquitous.mp3 file, the same file type used for swapping songs over the ‘Net. A voice talent anywhere in the world can set up a home studio and be in business. The talent records the voiceover, with direction via phone patch, if desired by the client, into a PC equipped with simple audio editing software. Next an.mp3 file is created and then sent as an email attachment to the agency and/or client. No expensive satellite or ISDN linkups. No commercial production facility. Simply put: no middleman.

The next evolution of digital voice-over distribution, which is still seeking wide acceptance, is live two-way digital recording over the Internet. Products like Source Element’s “Source Connect” now allow two ProTools-equipped studios, each with Source Connect, to connect directly over the Internet. No ISDN lines and no phone charges. ISDN is still dominant, but Source Connect and similar products will most likely supplant ISDN, once again relegating an obsolete piece of electronic equipment to doorstop status.

Is all of this a good thing? Not entirely. The home VO studio explosion can be likened to the desktop publishing frenzy back in the 20th century. Just because you have a powerful printing press in a box on your desk doesn’t mean you’re automatically going to produce coherent, well-designed publications. Everyone thought they could buy PageMaker, print some business cards and letterhead, and, voila, an instant living publishing newsletters. Of course, the vast majority of these desktop publishing newbies discovered it takes more than technology to succeed. First and foremost, it takes talent, training, and experience to use the tool, the software, effectively, and, most important, profitably.

With that caveat out of the way, and assuming you have the chops to make a go of your home voice-over business, let’s look at how the Internet also has revolutionized promotion of voice over talents.

Drumming up business

Before the home studio, voiceover artists had to go to studios to record. Promotion included distributing your demo on cassette or CD to production houses, ad agencies, talent agents, and casting agents; making phone calls; sending reminder cards with your latest credits; sending thank you gifts to clients at holiday time; and networking with anyone and everyone. Actually, to be successful, you still have to do all of those things, but now you have additional promotional opportunities via the World Wide Web.

So, where to start? First, put up a website. Design it yourself or hire a site designer who specializes in helping voice actors and other performers get their website on-line. What should you put on your website? The most important function of your site is to feature your demos. It also should highlight your credits, contact info, and bio. The best way to learn about voice-over website design is to look at voice talent sites. Do a search for keywords, e.g. voiceovers, voice overs, voice over talent, voice over artists, and any other search terms you can think of and see what other talents have done. If you’re designing your own site, subscribe to a couple of search engine optimization email newsletters, e.g. WebProNews and SiteProNews. They’ll give you lots of helpful design info and help you “optimize” your site, so you get high placement in search engines.

OK. You have your website up and hummin’. Now, be sure to put your website’s address on anything and everything you mail to prospective clients: you demos, stationery, business cards, reminder cards, etc. If you still have reams of stationery left, then just include the website address in the letters you type and print. For all those demos, business cards, and reminder cards still sitting on your shelf, buy some labels, print your website address on them, and stick ‘em on.

Caveat Emptor!

There are plenty of places on the World Wide Web to promote your voice over services, both free and for a fee–BUT BE CAREFUL! Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware) is the operative phrase. Here are some free places to place a link to your website:

As for paying for to listed with an on-line voice talent site, be sure the site is legitimate. Unfortunately, like so many other things that start off well, a few bad apples begin turning up. Before you pony up any dough, be sure to speak/write to other talent listed on the site to see if the site has actually gotten them any work. Groups and forums

There are a lot of voice over related groups and forums on the Web. Go to Yahoo Groups and type in voice over, voiceovers, voice over talent, voice over artist, etc., and you’ll find many groups where you can drop in and learn from others. Google also has voice-over groups. Also, visit vo-bb.com. Participate if you’d like, but remember, anything you post in these chat rooms stays there pretty much for life. If you might regret saying something, then keep your fingers away from the keyboard.

Marketing vs. talent

You may be the greatest voice talent on the planet, but, if no one knows who you are, well, then that’s wasted talent. So, get out there and promote and make your business a success.

Handcuffing by girls and hanging them from different trees with a noose around their neck, he left them hanging from the trees. He took them to Hutchinson Island a remote place, which he thought, would be their final resting place. He told them the evils of hitchhiking and he would be back with men who would sell them to slave traders.

Little did he know that Nancy Ellen Trotter with everything she had would manage to get out of her noose and get help for herself and Pamela Sue Wells.

Although he was fired from his position this did not stop his reign of terror. Charged with two counts of aggravated assault, he did not seem to be fearful of the consequences he might face because of his actions. Although arrested and put in jail for only two months, the Judge D.C. Smith released him and helped to set off a chain of killings that would span many counties in Florida and other states too.

Throughout this graphic novel, this reviewer read of the heinous mutilations, decapitations and dismemberments inflicted on Shaffer’s victims. The list of victims and crimes seemed endless.

Trying to convince everyone he was mentally insane and should be sent to an institution, was not only a ploy of Schaffer to try and get out of going to prison for life, but one more way this reviewer realized just how evil and cunning this man was.

Although, there were many who interviewed him in jail, and many who corresponded with him and wanted to try to write his story and listen to his words, none was as powerful as those of the victims that were silenced by him.

When Gerard Schaffer finally got his just rewards in prison, an inmate silenced his human voice. He used his knowledge of the law and his skill to write appeals and more to rat out his fellow inmates and try to get the courts to allow him to be set free.

In order to really understand and know just how twisted; insane and sick this man was, you need to read this book and make sure that their messages is sent aloud and clear to all young people.

To the real heroes of this story Philip Shailer, the Broward State Attorney, Judge Trowbridge who presided on the bench, was relentless, and made sure he would never go free, the girls thank you. To all of the detectives on this case, to Jack for his diligence and hard work investigating these killings and to all of those in law enforcement that made sure that this sick and twisted man did not go free, we the victims of Gerard Schaffer yell loud and clear: THANK YOU!

There are not enough stars to give this book. I would give this book five stars and five more for the outstanding and amazing author who wrote this important novel.

Everything good that can be said about Spielberg has probably alright been said so the best compliment I can give this Hollywood icon is that I saw Jaws when I was five years old.
